How the EU VAT calculation works

Each EU country sets its own standard rate within an EU minimum of 15%. The maths is the same everywhere:

  • Adding VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate). A €100 service in Germany (19%) bills at €119.
  • Removing VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). A €121 total in Germany contains €21 of VAT and €100 of net price.

Rates at a glance

Luxembourg is the lowest standard rate at 17%, Hungary the highest at 27%. The big economies cluster at 19–23%: Germany 19%, France 20%, Italy 22%, Spain 21%, Netherlands 21%, Poland 23%. Selecting the country in the form shows its rate next to the name, and the result note repeats it so you can double-check.

Who uses this

  • Marketplace sellers checking EU consumer prices under OSS.
  • Freelancers quoting net prices to clients in another member state.
  • Shoppers splitting a foreign receipt into price and VAT for a tax-refund claim.

The table reflects 2026 standard rates, but governments do raise them — always confirm with the national tax authority before you invoice. Reduced rates for food, books and medicine are country specific and not covered here.

Worked examples

  • France 20%: €250 net → gross €300.00, VAT €50.00.
  • Germany 19%: €238 gross → net €200.00, VAT €38.00.
  • Hungary 27%: €500 net → gross €635.00 — the highest VAT load in the EU.

For UK amounts use the UK VAT Calculator or the Reverse VAT Calculator for gross-to-net splits.

Frequently asked questions

Is VAT the same in every EU country?

No. Each member state sets its own standard rate within an EU-mandated minimum of 15%. Rates range from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary, which is why picking the right country matters.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price in Europe?

Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the country's rate. For a €121 total in Germany (19%): €121 ÷ 1.19 = €101.68 net, with €19.32 of VAT inside.

Do these rates include reduced rates?

This tool uses each country's standard rate, which applies to most goods and services. Reduced rates for essentials like food, books or medicine vary widely — check the national tax authority for those.

Which rate applies when selling across borders?

For goods, the destination country's rate usually applies under the OSS/IOSS schemes; for services, the customer's country often does. Cross-border VAT is complex — this tool is for single-country price maths, not filing advice.

Are the rates kept up to date?

The table reflects standard rates for 2026, but governments do raise them. Always confirm the current rate with the official tax authority before invoicing — the page says when a rate was last checked.
