How the hourly-to-salary conversion works

Salary is just hourly pay stretched across the year. Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the weeks you work each year. The default assumes full-time work: 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year — the familiar 2,080-hour baseline used in US government statistics.

Formula

annual  = hourly × hours-per-week × weeks-per-year monthly = annual ÷ 12 weekly  = hourly × hours-per-week

At $20 an hour on a standard schedule: $20 × 40 × 52 = $41,600 a year, or $3,466.67 a month before tax.

Adjusting for real life

  • Unpaid time off: two unpaid weeks means 50 weeks a year, not 52 — drop the weeks input accordingly.
  • Regular overtime: add it to the weekly hours input. Remember overtime is usually paid at 1.5×, so 5 overtime hours count as 7.5 regular hours.
  • Part-time: 25 hours a week at $18 is $18 × 25 × 52 = $23,400 a year.

Gross, not net

The result is gross pay — before federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, health premiums and retirement contributions. A useful rule of thumb in the US is that take-home pay lands around 70–80% of gross, depending on your state and withholdings, but run your own numbers with a paycheck calculator for anything binding.

Worked examples

  1. Full-time at $25/hour: $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000/year — $4,333.33 a month, $1,000 a week.
  2. Part-time at $15/hour: $15 × 30 × 50 weeks = $22,500/year with two unpaid weeks off.
  3. Skilled trade at $60/hour: $60 × 40 × 52 = $124,800/year before tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hourly pay to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work per week, then by the weeks you work per year. At $25 an hour for 40-hour weeks all year: $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 gross annual salary.

What is $20 an hour annually?

At 40 hours and 52 weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600 per year, about $3,466.67 per month or $800 per week before taxes. Adjust the weeks figure if you take unpaid time off.

How many hours is a full-time work year?

A common full-time baseline is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). Many employers and government statistics use this number for annual salary conversions.

Does this calculator include taxes and deductions?

No. The results are gross pay before income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any other deductions. Net take-home pay depends on your location, filing status and withholdings.

How do I account for unpaid vacation or overtime?

Lower the weeks-per-year input (for example 50 weeks if you take two unpaid weeks off) and include your typical overtime hours in the weekly hours field for a more accurate annual figure.
