Reverse Sales Tax Calculator – Pre-Tax from Total
Enter a receipt total and a state — see the pre-tax price and exactly how much sales tax it contains, using that state's base rate.

How reverse sales tax works
A checkout total already includes tax, so the tax is not a flat percentage of the receipt. You divide instead:
- Pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate) — at 7.25% that is total ÷ 1.0725.
- Sales tax = total − pre-tax price.
For a $107.25 receipt in a 7.25% state: $107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100.00 pre-tax, with $7.25 of tax. Taking 7.25% off the total would have given the wrong answer — the tax applies to the pre-tax price, not to itself.
Why the state matters
Every state sets its own base rate: zero in Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire and Delaware; 4% in Alabama; over 7% in California and Indiana. Picking the right state gives you the right divisor.
The local-tax caveat
Many cities and counties add local sales tax on top of the state rate, and some states tax groceries while others don't. When local tax applied at the register, this calculation using the state base rate will understate the tax in the total. It is exact wherever only the state rate was charged — and close enough for bookkeeping estimates elsewhere.
- Bookkeeping — split register totals into sales and tax payable.
- Tax-free claims — document the merchandise price on a purchase made abroad.
- Budget checks — see what an item really costs before tax.
Worked examples
- $107.25 receipt at CA base 7.25% → pre-tax $100.00, tax $7.25.
- $52.00 total at NY base 4% → pre-tax $50.00, tax $2.00.
- $30.00 total in Oregon (0%) → pre-tax $30.00, tax $0.00.

Frequently asked questions
How do I take sales tax out of a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. At 7.25%: pre-tax = total ÷ 1.0725, and tax = total − pre-tax. For a $107.25 receipt, the pre-tax price is $100 and the tax is $7.25.
Why do I need the state for reverse sales tax?
Because every state sets its own rate — from 0% in states like Oregon and Montana to over 7% base rates elsewhere. The state rate gives you the right divisor; local add-ons are noted separately.
The receipt total includes local tax — will this be exact?
Maybe not. Many cities and counties add local sales tax on top of the state rate, so a receipt from those areas contains more tax than the state base rate implies. The result is exact when only the state rate applied.
When is reverse sales tax useful?
Splitting receipts into taxable and non-taxable parts for bookkeeping, claiming tax-free purchases, reconciling register totals, and checking that a vendor charged the right amount.
